  EndNote X2®

A software that:

  • stores and organizes citations found from many sources
  • inserts these citations into a Word document, and
  • automatically formats your references according to a predefined citation style

Follow the steps below to start using EndNote X2.

Step 1 - Install EndNote X2 via NUS Software Catalogue (In-campus | Off-campus| Mac)

Step 1

In Campus| Off-Campus | Mac

In Campus : Install EndNote X2 via NUS Software Catalogue

 

Before you begin:
  • Ensure that your computer is connected to NUS computer network and you have administrator rights to install.
  • Un-install any previous versions of EndNote from your computer.
  1. Login to NUSNET on campus (for laptops: login to NUS Open wireless network)
     
  2. Click on http://software.nus.edu.sg/catalogue/sc-setup.exe to install the Software Catalogue issued by Computer Centre
     
  3. After installation in b., in your computer, go to Start -- > All Programs --> Software Catalogue
     
  4. Click on Software Catalogue Client 1.2  
     
  5. A window opens, entitled Software Catalogue.
     
  6. On the left, under Software Category, click on Specialised Applications
     
  7. Click on EndNote X2 to install (click here to view installation steps in detail)
     
  8. When installation is complete. this toolbar should appear in Microsoft Word

 

 

Off-Campus: Install EndNote X2 via NUS Software Catalogue

  1. Login to NUSNET via WebVPN : http://webvpn.nus.edu.sg
  2. Follow the steps b. to h. above for "in campus"

Mac: Install EndNote X2

EndNote X2 for Mac is now available!

(If you are accessing outside NUS, please login to NUS network via WEBVPN  http://webvpn.nus.edu.sg)

1) From Finder, choose Go-> Connect to server

2) Connect to afp://macfile.nus.edu.sg (Login using your NUSNET userid and password)

3) Select “Macintosh Volume”. Open the folder “site license”.

4) Search for the relevant software you are entitled to inside the respective folder.

5) Double-click on the .dmg file. When the files mount, open the folder and follow the instructions.

6) Please inform software@nus.edu.sg after the installation is done so that the connection to the installation can be released for other users.

Step 2

Create a new EndNote Library

  1. Open EndNote X2 program.
     
  2. Click on File --> New... to create a new EndNote Library.
     
  3. Enter a filename. Click Save.

Step 3

Import saved citations from other sources into EndNote X2

There are several ways to collect references into EndNote:

  1. Search databases / catalogues and import into EndNote.
    See Instructions on How to Import References into EndNote X2

     
  2. Manually create a new reference -->
     
    1. On the menu bar, click on References.
    2. Click New Reference.
    3. Enter information and simply close the window (click on X at top right).
    4. The reference will appear under the group All References.
       
  3. Import from EndNote Web
     
  4. Import from a document formatted with Cite While You Write -->
     
    1. Open EndNote program and create an EndNote library if not previously created.
    2. Open a Word document containing references from an EndNote library. Look for the EndNote X2 toolbar.
    3. Click on the icon Export Traveling Library.
    4. A dialog box pops up. Choose the EndNote library where the references are to be stored.

Step 4

Insert Citations from EndNote into Microsoft Word

  1. Open an EndNote Library or Click on File --> Open to open an EndNote X2 library previously created (see Step 2).
     
  2. In the Endnote library, select (click on) a reference to be cited.
     
  3. Open Microsoft Word and create a document. Place cursor at insertion point.
     
  4. Look for the EndNote X2 toolbar.
    1. For Word 2003, click on icon Insert Selected Citation(s)
    2. For Word 2007, click on the button Insert Citation. Click Insert Selected Citation(s).
       
  5. The reference is inserted into Word. Repeat a to d above to insert more references.

Step 5

Change Reference Style of Inserted Citations

  1. In a Microsoft Word document where references from EndNote library has been inserted, look for the EndNote X2 toolbar
    1. For Word 2003 & below, click on the icon Format Bibliography.
    2. For Word 2007, go to Style: -->  Select another style
       
  2. A dialog box appears. Under With output style:, click Browse ...
     
  3. Select the desired journal citation style (eg. APA 5th) and click OK.
     
  4. The inserted references are now re-formatted.
