Update on CJ Koh Law Library renovations

Loh Mee Lan, Law Library

The CJ Koh Law Library (see front page article on its renaming to the C J Koh Law Library) has been undergoing renovations since July 2000. Phase One of the renovation has been completed. The entire basement was renovated and handed over to the Library on 1 November 2000. We immediately began the task of shifting the offices and the library collections from the entrance level to the new basement level.

Renovated basement of Law Library

The bulk of the materials, previously located on the entrance level, are now kept at the basement and are divided into 3 major sections. The first section is located just outside the Reference Office. This area consists of the Reference Collection (Ref Coll), Current Periodicals (Cur Per), Bound Periodicals (Bound Per), International Law Collection (Int Law Coll), US Collection (US Coll), ASEAN Collection (ASEAN Coll), Chinese Collection (Chinese Coll) and the Singapore/Malaysia Collection (Sing/Mal Coll). The remaining sections are located at the far end of the Library and consist of the UK Collection, Commonwealth Collection and Main Shelves. Please see the floor plan below for the exact locations.

Law Library Basement Floor Plan

The Loan Counter, the RBR Collection and the Faculty Reading Room are still located on the entrance floor. Please note that there will be no toilet facilities within the Library during this period of renovation. The nearest Ladies toilet is located just outside the Library entrance while the nearest Gents toilet is located at the furthest end of the passageway on the same level as the Library entrance.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you, our users, for your patience and understanding during the period of the move. Some of you may have been particularly inconvenienced by the shifting as it took place during the examination period. Your continued support and understanding during the next phase of renovation is greatly appreciated.

LW Closed Stacks

Due to a severe shortage of shelf space in Law Library, some of the materials had to be kept in the closed stacks at Law Library or at Central Library. These are mainly from the Commonwealth Collection (Indian materials and some Australian statutes). This is a temporary measure until the Library is completely renovated after which the materials will be returned to their original location.

Always check LINC to confirm if a title or volume is in the Closed Stacks. The location code will either be LW Closed Stacks or LW Closed Stacks (CL) (a new location code). You can make a reservation for such materials by clicking the Request button in LINC. The Law Library staff will retrieve and put aside these items for you for up to five days. Collect the items you have requested at CJ Koh Law Library Loan Counter. Library staff retrieve requests placed before 10.30 am by 1.00 pm on Mondays to Saturdays. Requests placed after 10.30 am but before 3.30 pm on Mondays to Fridays can be collected after 6.00 pm on the same day. Holds placed after 10.30 am on Saturday and any time on Sunday will only be available for collection after 1 pm on Monday. There are no retrievals on Sundays and public holidays.
