Sim Chuin Peng, Chinese Library
China Journal Net (CJN) is a Web-based database
containing full text articles from a large number of journals
published in China. It covers all areas of humanities,
social sciences, science and technology, reflecting the
latest research development and results of these fields in
China. CJN is divided by subject into nine series with more than
3 million full text articles and is increasing at a rate of half
a million full text articles per year.
The NUS Library currently subscribes to the following 3 series:
Medicine-Hygiene, Literature-History-Philosophy and Economics-Politics-Laws
comprising 1,230 full-text journals. The database includes an additional 2,240
journals with just bibliographic citations and abstracts. The
database is updated monthly.
To access CJN, point your browser to:
CJN is available to all NUS staff and students anywhere in the campus.
For instructions on remote access via NUSNET Dialup please check
http://www.dialup.nus.edu.sg.
At CJN Home page, select the database you want:
(full-text database)
(bibliographic database)
(abstracts database)
At the login screen click on (Confirm). To view the full text you are required to download the
CAJ Viewer. If you are using Netscape browser you
need to also download the CAJ Plug-in. These two programs are available for download at the
CJN Home page. To install these two programs you would need WinZip.
Use Windows Shopping on NUSNET to buy WinZip, which is listed under Utilities.
At the next screen, you must choose one of the
three series to search. Only one series from one database
can be searched at a time. When using the
bibliographic database, besides the 3 series that the Library has,
you are able to search the other six series in CJN.
There are two search interfaces in the CJN databases:
(basic search) and (combined search). You are able to limit your search to a single
year or up to a maximum range of 3 years. You can
also instruct the system to search the entire series or
limit yourself to specific subjects within the series. In
the bibliographic database, you are even able to go down
to the issue level to view the contents of a specific issue of a journal.
Basic Search
This is the default search interface after you
have selected the series to search. In the basic search
interface (left-hand frame) select the field you want to
search, e.g. full text, title, abstracts, author, keyword,
organization, cited reference, and input the search term in the
box provided. The search results are displayed in the
upper right-hand frame. Click on the title you are interested
in to view the bibliographic information (lower right-hand frame).
At the bibliographic display you can click on
the author name or the journal name to search for all
articles written by this author or all articles published in
this journal. If you are in the full text database, click
the document number to access the full text article in a
new window. In the new full text window, click on (Download to View)
to view the full text article.
If you have retrieved too many titles you can use
the filter to refine the search results. At the end of the
title listing, select the field that you wish to use. Input
the search term and click (Second Search).
Combined Search
The Combined Search interface allows you to
search across different fields at the same time by
entering search terms in more than one field. Select the
Boolean operators AND or OR to use between the fields.
By default, AND is used to combine the search terms.
Downloading
Full text articles can be downloaded or printed.
The CAJ Viewer is required to read to read the downloaded file.
Bibliographic citations can be printed or
downloaded individually using the browser's print and save icons.
